Thanksgiving Air Fryer Chicken Wings

The temperature outside dropped below 50F and my thoughts turned to Thanksgiving. I can’t help it. I was definitely looking forward to roasting a turkey in my oil-less fryer. But then, I thought, I love wings. How about taking that wonderful turkey seasoning and putting it on a batch of wings too? “Brilliant!” I exclaimed. So I made some Thanksgiving air fryer chicken wings and by golly, the holiday came early! Not only did these wings taste great, they made the house smell fantastic too!

Thanksgiving Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Back For Seconds

I made these Thanksgiving air fryer chicken wings two days in a row. I had to. They were great. I’ll let you in on a little modification that makes them even more Thanksgiving-y. I seasoned the wings upfront, like the recipe states. And I seasoned them when they were done, also like it states. But I also snuck in another round of seasoning. Before the last 6 minute cook, where the air fryer temp is increased to get that great crunchy skin, I placed the wings into a bowl and seasoned them some more. Back into the air fryer they went. Boy, were they ever finger-licking good!

Got Seasonings?

You have to take care of your dry seasonings. In return, they’ll take care of you by always being ready the next time you need them! Protect seasonings from the four main enemies of flavor: heat, light, air, and moisture. Never store them above the stove or oven, where steam and temperature swings cause caking and quick degradation. If you have a problem with high humidity causing your dry seasonings to cake, try adding a silica gel packet to the containers to remove moisture.

My Trusty Companion

My air fryer isn’t fancy. It doesn’t have any bells and whistles. Well, ok, it does have a bell when the timer goes off but that’s it. I don’t even use the timer actually. I use a timer on my phone that has two countdowns: one for 12 minutes and one for 6 minutes. That’s all I ever need to get perfect wings each and every time!

Air Fryer Blackened Wings

I love a good air-fried dry wing. The air fryer does a great job crisping up the skin while leaving the meat moist and tender. Although these air fryer blackened wings don’t have sauce, they definitely do not lack flavor. Blackening seasoning adds a nice spicy, herbal kick to wings. To me its like roasted chicken, only elevated. A lot. These are great wings. And beyond easy to make.

Air Fryer Blackened Wings

Double-Seasoned Deliciousness

I like to season my air fryer blackened wings twice. Once, before cooking. I can do that with these seasoning without fear of the seasoning burning because it doesn’t contain any sugar. The seasoning will get nice and toasted while the wings cook. And it imparts a great flavor to the skin and meat.

I season my wings again hot out of the air fryer. While the wings are still a little ‘wet’ from the fat cooking. Yep. Fat. Well, that’s what that is. And it helps seasoning still well. So I load up. No boring bites for me. Nothing but flavor in each and every one.

Air Fryer Thousand Island Wings

No, it’s not a typo. I made air fryer Thousand Island wings. Re-read it. I had to even after I typed it. It’s real. It almost felt weird writing it. But, oh and not only did I make them, I loved them. Big time. When I first read the recipe I wasn’t sure about what I was getting myself into. Was I about to waste a bunch of good ingredients for some crazy idea that should’ve never come to fruition?

The answer to that question is an emphatic “NO!”. “Different” is a great way to start out describing these wings. “Delicious” is another. With just 3 out-of-my-pantry ingredients I was able to make an incredible wing sauce that really wows. These aren’t Buffalo-style wings. And they sure as heck aren’t dry wings. Nope. But if you want to really impress people at your next party, serve these. You’ll have people begging for more!

Air Fryer Thousand Island Wings

Oh, That Sauce!

The wings for these air fryer Thousand Island wings are pretty much your standard, good air fryer wings. No special seasoning. No special treatment. Nothing that is going to fight with the real star of the show: the sauce. At first, the combination of Thousand Island dressing, onion soup mix and apricot preserves may seem odd. But it ends up being a wonderfully tangy, slightly sweet, tasty sauce that is truly finger-licking good.

Dip Away

Make extra sauce. Dip your wings in it. Dip chips in it. You can even dip (gasp!) chicken nuggets in it. Pretty much anything.

Want Heat?

Add a few good pinches of red pepper flake if you want a bit of a kick to your sauce. But don’t go crazy with it. You don’t want the heat to take over the wonderful flavor.

Dan-O’s Original Seasoning Dry Wings

Have you seen those machines you can buy to make your house smell good? I always look at them and scratch my head. Why do you need one of those when all you need to make your home smell outrageously fantastic is to make some Dan-O’s Original Seasoning dry wings? And as an added bonus, after you get the homestead smellin’ good, you can enjoy some delicious wings! How much more of a win-win could you need? Or want?

Dan-O's Original Seasoning Dry Wings

Herby Deliciousness

Dan-O’s Original Seasoning was invented for poultry. Rosemary. Garlic. Good stuff that you might normally find on a roast turkey or chicken. Well, don’t forget the wings! These Dan-O’s Original Seasoning dry wings are what roasted wings should be. Crispy skin. Wonderful herby flavors. Moist, tender meat.

A Twist On My Usual Dry Wings

I’m a huge fan of dry wings. It’s hard for me to resist super-seasoned wings with that great crunchy skin. Usually, I season my wings before cooking and then again after for extra flavor. For these wings, however, I go with one good, healthy seasoning beforehand. That’s it. No post-cook seasoning required or needed. These are great wings without it. If you want more you can surely toss or sprinkle the cooked wings just before serving.

Sweet Peeper Air Fryer Dry Wings

The air fryer is my go-to tool for making fantastic dry wings. They’re so simple, so easy, but oh so delicious. Today, I made a little batch of Sweet Peeper air fryer dry wings for my lunch. And I was happy. Heck, I was more than happy. Oh that crunchy skin. That aroma while they were cooking. And bite-after-bite of seasoned chicken. A wonderful combination of brown sugar, paprika, honey and other herbs, these wings are a great change from your usual Buffalo-inspired wings.

Sweet Peeper Air Fryer Dry Wings

Crazy Easy

Making great air fryer dry wings really is easy. Season the wings a bit. Cook them to perfection. Season them some more. And if you’re like me, eat them immediately and burn your mouth. Well, it has happened. I can’t help myself. These Sweet Peeper air fryer dry wings smelled so good while they were cooking that I couldn’t wait for them to cool down a bit before taking those first few bites.

Crispier Than A Fall Evening

My approach to air fryer wings always gets me that great crunchy crispy skin. If you can handle the wait, let them cool a bit after cooking (and after that last seasoning) to crisp up a bit more.

Twice-Fried Air Fryer Wings

What started out as an experiment turned out to be some of the best wings I’ve ever made. These twice-fried air fryer wings have tremendous flavor. More than just if I’d just seasoned some wings and tossed them into the fryer, which is my old go-to way. No sauce is used after the first cook. An initial cool-down and an overnight stay in the fridge is almost like dry-brining the wings. Then it’s back into the air fryer. The meat has much more flavor. The texture is still great. The skin is still crunchy. Saucing them after the second fry is optional in my opinion. They’re great without a sauce.

Twice-Fried Air Fryer Wings

More Flavor. More Better.

I recommend that you go heavy with the seasoning for the first fry of these twice-fried air fryer wings. That flavor will ‘soak’ in overnight in the fridge. That’s the ‘dry brining’ part of this approach. You don’t need to season them again after that. You can add some after the last fry if you want. And you can add sauce at that time too, if you wish.

One Cool Wing

After the first stint in the air fryer, make sure you let the wings cool completely before putting them into a container (or baggie) and placing them in the fridge. Completely. Not warm. Room temperature. The last thing you want is for the wings to still be hot when they go into the fridge. They’ll end up steaming in their little sauna as they cool. That moisture will make for some wing skin sadness later. Soggy. Wimpy. And without that clean bite-through that you want. So let them cool a bit. They are hurting anything. Just let them sit there. You’ll be rewarded for your patience the next day.

Air Fryer Holy Voodoo Dry Wings

Grillers and BBQ smokers all over the country tout how great Meat Church’s seasonings are. Me, I always make wings first with any new seasoning I pick up. I don’t sauce them. I don’t bury them in other flavors. My favorite is making dry wings. And I found these air fryer Holy Voodoo dry wings to be absolutely delicious! The seasoning is slight sweet with both white and brown sugar. It’s a bit salty, but I do tend to like salty seasonings. And it’s just a tad spicy. It’s one of the most balanced mixes I’ve had. There wasn’t anything about it that I didn’t just flat-out love. No wonder everyone is talking about it!

Air Fryer Holy Voodoo Wings

Double-Seasoned

I season my air fryer Holy Voodoo dry wings a bit before putting them into the air fryer. Now, because of the sugars in the seasoning I don’t go nuts with it. But I want that flavor before to be added before and after cooking the wings. You can actually skip this step but.. why?

… And sometimes I go for the triple play! I also season my wings (AGAIN!) once I have them on the plate or platter or in the basket… or however I’m going to serve them. Just that one last ‘hit’ of seasoning before I sit down to devour them!

Try all of the seasonings from Meat Church on wings. Or whatever you’re cooking.

There’s nothing fancy about the air fryer that I use. But it works great on wings. I use it a lot. And I do mean a lot. Mostly for wings. I know. Shocking. Cleanup is fairly easy. It easily holds enough wings for two people. Or one me when I’m really wing-hungry.

Instructions

  • Season the wings with the Meat Church Holy Voodoo seasoning. Don't go crazy with it as the high heat from the air fryer can burn the sugars. You want enough to taste the great flavors, but don't drown the wings in it.
  • Place wings in fridge for 30 minutes.
  • Lightly spray the basket of your air fryer with non-stick spray. Preheat per manufacturer's recommendation to 350 F.
  • Add the wings to the basket (be careful it's hot!).
  • Cook wings for 12 minutes.
  • Flip the wings and cook another 12 minutes.
  • Increase the air fryer temperature to 400 F and cook another 6 minutes.
  • Remove wings from fryer and place in a bowl. Toss with more seasoning, to taste. Now's a good time to not be shy with the seasoning.
  • Let cool slightly (the wings will crisp as they cool) then serve.

Notes

Note: The full 30 minute cook time is for large, meaty wings. If your wings are a bit thinner (er… scrawny) back the times down to 10/10/4 minutes instead of 12/12/6 minutes.

Air Fryer Maple Wings

Yowsa. Now we’re talking about some seriously devour-worthy wings. These air fryer maple wings are beyond finger-lickingly good. As soon as I took my first bite I instantly regretted not making more wings and sauce. The wings are your standard air fryer wings. A little seasoning and cooked until the skin is crispy. The sauce, though, is the star of the show. The right sweetness. The right umami thing. And just a kiss of heat. These are great wings!

Air Fryer Maple Wings

Step Up Your Teriyaki Game

You can use whatever teriyaki sauce you like to make these air fryer maple wings. But for me, my go-to teriyaki sauce is from the fine folks over at Bourbon Barrel Food. They have two versions actually. The Kentuckyaki sauce is a wonderfully bourbon-infused sauce that has such a great, deep flavor. It’s great anywhere I need a teriyaki sauce. And of course their spicy version is … spicier! It also makes for a great sauce for these wings!

The maple syrup in this sauce gives off a wonderful, sweet, warm aroma. It kind of ‘sets the mood’ for these wings. Turn down the lights, sit down, and enjoy some great wings!

Oh, The Sauce!

As easy as it is to make, and as simple as the ingredients are, the sauce is really amazing. Wings are not this sauce’s only perfect match, either. It’s perfect for dipping chicken nuggets or fingers. Like beyond perfect even. Slather it on grilled chicken breast just before you put it on a bun for a chicken sandwich. Yum.

Ribs are another great use for this sauce. Asian-inspired flavors and pork are the perfect marriage. Try it and you’ll never go back to using traditional BBQ sauces on your ribs.

Oh, and burgers too! Ground pork or chicken burgers are even better with the sauce on them!

Perdue Hot ‘N Spicy Crispy Air Fryer Wings

Perdue Hot ‘N Spicy Crispy Air Fryer wings really made me happy. I’m not usually impressed with frozen, prepared wings. They’re usually scrawny and tasteless. Not these. Not even close. These wings are definitely hot and spicy. They have a delicious, crunchy batter. They cook up in no time in an air fryer (you can also prepare them in the oven). The aroma as they cook is dream-worthy. And perhaps best of all, they are not scrawny! Nope, these are meaty, tender, juicy, tasty, crunchy wings! Score!

I was wrong, and I’m sorry

I didn’t have high expectations for these wings and I was wrong about them. If you like battered wings and are in a hurry, you can’t beat them. Eat them straight out of the air fryer, or do as I did and dunk them in a little Buffalo wing sauce and Ranch dressing. Whatever works for you!

Perdue Hot 'N Spicy Crispy Air Fryer Wings

Cook time

The packaging for Perdue Hot ‘N Spicy Crispy Air Fryer Wings says to cook them at 400 F for 16 minutes. Maybe it’s just my air fryer (which is a 1700 watt model), but I found that 14 minutes is better. The wings may not seem crunchy after the shorter time, but they do get crunchier as they cool a little. I thought they came out great. Any longer and they start to get a little dark. Not burned, just dark.

Perdue makes roasted and a lemon pepper versions of these wings. Try them. You’ll love them too and they’re great for your fear-the-heat friends!

You can serve your wings with a dipping sauce on the side if you prefer. You know. Ranch. Blue cheese. Whatever you prefer. I have a number of dipping sauces you can make at home too. I wouldn’t use any sauce that would ‘fight’ the flavors of these wings, though. Use something more mellow.

I serve my side dipping sauces in condiment cups.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400 F per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Add the wing pieces and cook for 16 minutes. Note: I prefer 14 minutes. I recommend checking them after 12 or so minutes to see if you are happy with the color of the wings and remove them before 16 minutes if desired.
  • Remove wings and let cool for 2 minutes before serving with your desired sauces.

Notes

Remember that if you have to refrigerate your open bottle of wing sauce, let it sit out on the counter for at least 30 minutes before using. You don’t want to ‘shock’ hot, just-cooked wings with a cold sauce.

How To Cook Frozen Wings in an Air Fryer

I’m not particular when it comes to cooking my chicken wings. Baked, deep-fried, grilled, it makes no difference to me. As long as I’m eating wings I’m one happy guy! During the week, though, if I want wings for lunch I gotta go with a technique that gets wings done with minimum fuss so I can get back to work. That usually means air frying them. I prefer to start with fresh wings, but sometimes they just can’t be found, so I grab some out of the freezer. This is my go-to method. This is how to cook frozen wings in an air fryer.

How To Cook Frozen Wings in an Air Fryer

It’s really easy

This is not a complicated process. There’s nothing fancy about cooking frozen wings in an air fryer. No defrosting. Just cook them up a bit, season them, finish the cooking and sauce them. I sometimes also add more seasoning at the end.

Wing selection

Frozen wings come ‘pumped’. That means they are injected with a broth-like solution that plumps them up and keeps them juicy after cooking. Most frozen turkeys come the same way so don’t let the words ‘contains chicken broth’ scare you off.

I prefer sections when I buy frozen wings. Drumettes and flats, separated. Whole wings are fine, but they’re a bit harder to put into a small air fryer without them overlapping. You don’t want your wings to overlap, you want nice even cooking.

Seasoning

I like to season my wings with a light hand at first. I don’t want the seasoning to burn in the air fryer. So I add a little after the wings have cooked just a bit. When they are done I can add more, along with sauce if I’m using it.

I usually use salt and pepper for my seasoning, but I like store-bought ones too. If I want to make a mix at home, my fire-eater seasoning is my favorite.

Do not add the seasoning when the wings are still fully frozen. It’ll just roll right off the wings.

Saucing

You can use any sauce you want, of course. For homemade Buffalo-style sauces, I’m a big fan of my copycat’s of Hooters medium and hot wing sauces.

Dipping

Blue cheese dressing or my copycat of Wingstop’s ranch dressing make for great dipping sauces for your air-fried wings.

Cleaning up

I wipe my air fryer basket out after each ‘fry’. Every few cooks I’ll put the basket into the dishwasher for a good cleaning. But, I never put it directly into the dishwasher without wiping it out first. I don’t want all of that chicken grease in my dishwasher or my pipes. Check your air fryer’s cleaning recommendations for further information about cleaning your particular model.

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400 F.
  • Add wings to the fryer basket and cook for 10 minutes. Do not overlap the wings. Try to not let them touch each other or the sides of the basket so that they cook evenly.
  • Use tongs to remove the wings to a bowl. Sprinkle with your wing seasoning and toss to coat.
  • Return to the air fryer and continue cooking another 10 minutes or until the wings are golden brown.
  • Remove from the air fryer. Toss with more seasoning and/or sauce and serve.

Notes

Do not thaw the wings ahead of time. You will cook them directly from the freezer.
