Tyson Korean BBQ Frozen Wings

I’m usually a make-them-fresh wing kinda guy. But I am also open to trying just about any wing you can make, including the ones I find in bags or boxes in the freezer section of my local grocery. I don’t usually have really high expectations for them. Often the ‘wings’ are small or don’t have much meat. Or are inconsistent in size and taste. So I tend to be kinda pessimistic when I buy them. I have to say, though, that I was pretty impressed with these Tyson Korean BBQ frozen wings. Meaty? Yep. Tasty? Yep.

Tyson Korean BBQ Frozen Wings

They Look Like Wings!

It might seem strange to be surprised that these Tyson Korean BBQ frozen wings look like wings. I’ve had some weird looking frozen wings before. I open the bag or box and wonder what I’m looking at. Not these, though. They looked like flats and drummies. I could recognize them. So right off the bat, things were looking good!

And They’re Tasty, Too!

These wings are coated in a kinda tangy Korean BBQ sauce. And not sorta coated. Unlike some wings, these wings have flavor all around, everywhere. These wings are not spicy. A little sweet but there’s no heat. I thought the sauce was quite tasty actually. I’d happily buy a bottle of this sauce by itself and use it on my own wings!

Spicy Dry Rub Hot Wings

There’s something about spicy dry-rubbed wings that I really love. It’s the subtle flavoring. Nothing overpowering. And you still taste the chicken. It’s easy to lose sight of the chicken when you drown them in sauce. That’s why I am more than happy with wings just tossed with seasoning, like these spicy dry rub hot wings. If you’ve never tried or even heard of dry wings, you’re missing out. Now’s your chance to have something amazing, something different than sauced wings.

Spicy Dry Rub Hot Wings

That Depth Of Flavor Thing

The seasoning on these spicy dry rub hot wings has the perfect combination of heat, with a hint of smoke. Smoked paprika is a great ingredient for cooking wings, especially if you deep fry them. It adds that ‘almost tastes grilled’ flavor without firing up the grill. I often add smoked paprika in place of sweet paprika for that reason.

I like to make my spice, rub and seasoning mixes in big batches and keep them in large bottles with easy-to-pour shaker lids.

Old Bay Wings

My wife and I recently spent a few days in lovely Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania while attending a conference. I made sure I had my ‘to-eat’ list down before leaving, because one thing you can be sure of finding in Pittsburgh: good food. At the top of my list was dry chicken wings. No, not dry like ‘ewww, this meat is dry’. Dry as in the wings aren’t tossed in sauce after being cooked. Instead they are dusted with seasoning. The end result is almost like roasted chicken, but with much more pronounced flavors. Now that we are back home, I had to make some of the favorites that I devoured in Pittsburgh, like these Old Bay wings, which are just flat-out incredible.

Old Bay Wings

My Old-Bay Addiction Just Got Worse

It’s really hard to beat crispy chicken wings that have the great crab-boil flavor of Old Bay seasoning. I ate these wings like I hadn’t had anything to eat in weeks. They disappeared so fast your head would spin. They are fantastic.

I went with Ranch dressing for the dipping sauce for these Old Bay seasoning wings, but seriously, you can eat them dry, as-is, with no sauce. There’s no need to drown them in sauce, the flavor stands on its own.

Also try some fantastic Old Bay Buffalo wings!

Perdue Roasted Crispy Air Fryer Wings

Perdue Roasted Crispy Air Fryer wings really made me happy. I’m not usually impressed with frozen, prepared wings. They’re usually scrawny and tasteless. Not these. Not even close. These wings have a nice, roasted flavor. They also have a great crunchy batter. They cook up in no time in an air fryer (you can also prepare them in the oven). The aroma as they cook is dream-worthy. And perhaps best of all, they are not scrawny! Nope, these are meaty, tender, juicy, tasty, crunchy wings! Score!

I was wrong, and I’m sorry

I didn’t have high expectations for these wings and I was wrong about them. If you like battered wings and are in a hurry, you can’t beat them. Eat them straight out of the air fryer. Dunk them in a little Buffalo wing sauce and Ranch dressing. Or blue cheese. Or Eat them plain. Whatever works for you!

Perdue Roasted Crispy Air Fryer Wings

Cook time

The packaging for Perdue Roasted Crispy Air Fryer Wings says to cook them at 400 F for 16 minutes. Maybe it’s just my air fryer (which is a 1700 watt model), but I found that 14 minutes is better. The wings may not seem crunchy after the shorter time, but they do get crunchier as they cool a little. I thought they came out great. Any longer and they start to get a little dark. Not burned, just dark.

Perdue makes hot ‘n spicy and a lemon pepper versions of these wings. Try them. You’ll love them too!

Meijer Caribbean Jerk Wing Sauce Wings

Hurray! Another great wing sauce from Meijer! Boy oh boy have I been happy with all of their sauces, and this Caribbean Jerk wing sauce is definitely no exception. It packs the allspice, the cinnamon, and oh yes, plenty of heat, into every single bite. For me, sometimes jerk seasoning or sauces can be a bit too heavy on the allspice. Not the case here. It’s the perfect blend of flavors.

Meijer Caribbean Jerk Wings

The Right Spice Balance

I don’t like to overly season my wings before cooking them, especially if I’m using a fantastic sauce like Meijer’s Caribbean Jerk wing sauce. I don’t want the spices to fight with the sauce, so I go simple: salt and pepper.

Legend Larry’s Raspberry Habanero Wing Sauce Wings

I have been more than pleased with the wing sauces from Legend Larry’s. I’ve never been to the actual restaurants, but if their bottled sauces are any indication of how good the food is, I’m going. And soon. Legend Larry’s Raspberry Habanero wing sauce is crazy good. You get a wonderful light raspberry flavor. Perfect. Then comes the heat. And it comes, too. Definitely spicy, but not so hot that you lose the sweet raspberry flavor. It’s the right amount of kick.

Legend Larry's Raspberry Habanero Wings

Berry Delicious And Spicy

Legend Larry’s Raspberry Habanero wing sauce is fantastic on wings. It’d also be great on smoked ribs, pulled pork, or roasted chicken for that matter. I’m all about the wings, though, and this sauce really hit all the right notes on a batch of wings I cooked up for lunch.

Remember that if you have to refrigerate your open bottle of wing sauce to let it sit out on the counter for at least 30 minutes before using. You don’t want to ‘shock’ hot, just-cooked wings with a cold sauce.

Legend Larry’s Bacon BBQ Wing Sauce Wings

Legend Larry’s Bacon BBQ wing sauce is not the first bottle of sauce I’ve tried from Legend Larry’s. And it won’t be the last, either. Every flavor is just spot-on fantastic. Some are mild, some are hot and some are very hot. Bacon BBQ is somewhere in the middle of the heat scale, combining a great smoky BBQ sauce with bacon deliciousness. No doubt it’d be fantastic on pulled pork or ribs, too, but for me, it’s a winner-winner on wings.

Legend Larry's Bacon BBQ Wings

Winner Winner Bacon Wing Goodness

I’m a wing addict. I often find myself just staring at the pics of the wings I’ve made. Wings tossed in Legend Larry’s Bacon BBQ wing sauce are a good example. Just look at that up there. Each and every bite nothing but delicious. That’s why I love wings so much.

House of Wings Hot Wing Sauce Wings

Alliger’s House of Wings is a highly-rated establishment located in Sayre, PA, halfway between Elmira and Owego NY. It’s definitely on my to-visit list because let me tell you, their wing sauces are insanely good. I recently ordered a bottle of every single one. This time I dug into the House of Wings hot wing sauce. Traditional Buffalo wing flavors with a good bit of kick. But not too much kick.

House of Wings Hot Wings

Just the right Kick

House of Wings’ hot wing sauce doesn’t pack so much heat that that is all you get. You also get really great flavor. This is another great wing sauce from House of Wings. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Remember that if you have to refrigerate your open bottle of wing sauce to let it sit out on the counter for at least 30 minutes before using. You don’t want to ‘shock’ hot, just-cooked wings with a cold sauce.

House of Wings Cajun Wing Sauce Wings

I bought a big box of bottled wing sauces from Alliger’s House of Wings. Located in Sayre, PA, Alliger’s has some of the best bottled sauces I’ve ever had. I cannot get enough of them. The Cajun wing sauce is no exception. It’s a very unique combination of Louisiana-inspired spices. It’s not too hot, either. It has just the right spiciness and the perfectly different flavor. It’s different and very good.

House of Wings Cajun Wings

Buffalo-Inspired Cajun Wings

My only complaint about House of Wings Cajun wing sauce is that I didn’t order enough of it. Like the rest of Alliger’s sauces, it’s vinegar based. Like a more traditional Buffalo wing sauce. There’s nothing mysterious about it, it’s just good and you always end up with a fantastic wing experience. Ok, so my other complaint is that I wish I lived closer to Sayre, Pennsylvania!

Smoked and Fried Wings

Wonderfully smoky, tender meat with a lightly crispy skin, these smoked and then fried chicken wings were a thing of beauty. These are one of the most dangerous things you could ever put in front of me. I don’t even need any sauce to toss or dunk them in, either. Just give me a big basket of them and get out of the way!

Smoked and Fried Wings

First You Smoke ‘Em

The process is simple. Season your wings, and place them onto your smoker. No messing around with them either. Just smoke for 2 hours.

Then You Fry Them

When the wings are done you toss them into a deep fryer for a minute or so, until golden brown and lightly crispy. You can also make a big huge batch and freeze the smoked wings (before frying). All you have to do is thaw them and deep fry them when you’re ready to serve them at a later time. I was worried that making them from the frozen smoked wings would result in over-cooked, tough wings, but oh no, they were fantastic!

There’s a brewpub by our house that makes crazy-good chicken wings. They smoke them first over a mix of mesquite and cherry woods, then flash fry them. They sauce them then place them over a hot flame to finish them off. My approach is similar, but I don’t always put them onto the grill at the end. They are fantastic either way, but grilling them real quick does help set the sauce.

Got an air fryer too? Also try some air fryer wings.

  • Fire up your smoker for 225 F. Use any wood you like. I used Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel chunks because I wanted a good, noticeable smoke flavor. Use a lighter wood if you want your wings to be a little less smoky.
  • Toss the wings with plenty of the wing seasoning.
  • Place the wings onto the smoker and smoke for 2 hours. No need to rotate or flip them.
  • When done, remove from the smoker. You can deep fry them immediately or freeze them for thawing and frying later.
  • To fry, heat canola oil to 350 F.
  • Working in batches, add the wings and fry for 1-2 minutes or until they are the desired color.
  • Let cool slightly. Serve tossed with your favorite sauce and your favorite dipping sauce on the side. Click here for our guide on how to sauce your wings.
  • Optional: Toss the wings onto a hot grill for 1 minute after saucing them to set the sauce.
