Baked Wings with Garlic Butter Sauce

It was time for something different. Time for a departure from my ‘usual’ wings, usually air-fried or deep-fried. Time for a departure from my ‘usual’ wing sauces, usually spicy but occasionally sweet. Yep, time for some baked wings with garlic butter sauce. These definitely are not my usual wings. The skin gets nice and crispy in the oven. Next, time for a toss in a very garlicky, very yummy sauce that is loaded with buttery tasty goodness. These are finger-lickingly good wings for sure!

You know, there’s absolutely no one that’s going to judge you if you decide you want even more garlic flavor when you make your baked wings with garlic butter sauce. I definitely guarantee that as the recipe is written you’re going to be getting a lot of garlic flavor. But I know there are people out there that want even more, so load up! Now’s the time to bring it!

Want your wings a little darker in color? Just put them under the broiler for a few minutes after they are fully cooked. Just keep an eye on them while you broil them. Never leave anything unattended under such high heat.

Baked Wings with Garlic Butter Sauce

Ingredients

For the wings

For the garlic butter sauce

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

For the wings

  • Preheat oven to 250 F.
  • Cover a baking sheet with foil.
  • Spray the foil with non-stick spray.
  • Pat the wings dry with a paper towel.
  • Place baking powder and salt into resealable bag or container. Add the wings. Seal and shake until the wings are coated.
  • Transfer wings to the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 30 minutes.
  • Increase the oven temperature to 425 F and cook the wings another 40-50 minutes or until golden brown, rotating the tray once.
  • Remove wings from oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes, while making the sauce.

For the garlic butter sauce

  • Melt butter in the oil over medium heat in a small saucepan.
  • Add the garlic and saute for 2 minutes to cook.
  • Reduce heat to low. Stir in parsley and salt. Keep warm until ready to use.

Baked Taco Wings

Yowsa. I could’ve eaten an obscene amount of these baked taco wings. I really wasn’t expecting them to be so great. Boy oh boy, I could not get enough of them. Great taco flavor with a lightly crunchy coating. And easy? It’s hard to get any easier to make. And on the side, a just-as-easy Ranch and chile pepper dipping sauce. I liked the sauce too much that I went on to make more and used it as a salad dressing!

A Great Party Appetizer

The coating on these baked taco wings is pretty delicate, so be careful when flipping them. Just take a little extra time and they’ll be fantastic. I’m a big fan of taco seasoning, so I might admit to adding a bit extra for a little more flavor. These wings would be excellent as an appetizer at a party. The flavor is definitely different than traditional Buffalo wings. The dipping sauce has a nice chile pepper flavor to it, combined with a more traditional Ranch dressing.

Baked Taco Wings

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 F.
  • Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spray the foil with non-stick spray.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour and taco seasoning.
  • Add the oil and stir to combine.
  • Working in batches, add the wings to the bowl and toss to coat. Press the wings into the mix to make sure you get all sides well coated. Place on the baking sheet, skin side down.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. Gently flip the wings and cook another 20 minutes.
  • While the wings are cooking, place the dressing and chiles into a blender and process until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Remove wings from oven and transfer to a serving platter with the dressing mix on the side.
  • Note: You can place the wings under the broiler for 1-2 minutes for a little more color, if desired but note that the coating will char if left in the oven too long. Keep an eye on them if you decide to do this.

I recommend making extra dressing.

Baked Salsa Verde Wings

Oh, yum! Juicy, flavorful wings! I had no idea how great of a marinade salsa verde could be. It really added a fantastic flavor to these baked salsa verde wings. They were so tender, yet still had a nicely crunchy skin. Served with citrus salsa verde cream sauce for dipping, I really enjoyed these wings! They are a total change from my usual way of making chicken wings, which is either in an air fryer or on a super-hot grill. And occasionally, in a deep-fryer.

If you have any juices on the baking dish as the wings cook, brush it back onto the wings for extra flavor. I found it important to turn the wings often to get a nice even cook and also crunchy skin. Plus, I did not have to put the wings under the broiler to crunch them up, these baked salsa verde wings didn’t need it!

Baked Hoisin Wings

It’s not uncommon for me to have wings two days in a row. It is uncommon for me to have the same wings two days in a row. These baked hoisin wings hit the spot for me. Lightly sweet, the lightly sweet and smoky sauce is finger-licking good. I could not get enough of it. These savory wings are baked until the chicken is cooked and the sauce is nicely brown. You won’t find crunchy skin here, but it does have a clean bite-through and great flavor.

Twice-Sauced… Or Thrice-Sauced?

I admit that I do ‘triple sauce’ my baked hoisin wings. The recipe (from the fine folks over at Kikkoman) calls for saucing them up front using half of the sauce. Then halfway through the baking, brush the wings with the remaining sauce. I always found that there was a bit too much sauce to use it all at once for that second saucing. Instead, I like to use half of the remaining sauce for the first brush, then I sauce them for the third time about 10 minutes before they are done. You don’t have to do that, the recipe is great as it is written. With my approach I always use up every ounce of the sauce.

  • 2 pounds chicken wings flats and drumettes separated, tips saved to make stock
  • ½ cup Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place wings in a bowl.
  • In another bowl combine the remaining ingredients. Pour HALF of the sauce over the wings and turn to coat well.
  • Transfer wings to the baking sheet. I prefer to put the flats skin-side up.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.
  • Brush the tops of the wings with the remaining sauce.
  • Bake another 20-25 minutes or until starting to brown.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

Use the juice from fresh-squeezed limes for the best results.

Arbol Chili and Garlic Wings

Oh man. My goodness. You talk about great tasting wings. These arbol chili and garlic wings were different and very, very tasty. The sauce is a wonderful blend of chiles, garlic and just enough jalapeno to give it a mild kick. A great kick. And oh such a great flavor. Southwestern-inspired, I would almost call this sauce an enchilada or taco sauce. And it’s fantastic on wings.

Perfect Heat

I mix the sauce with a little butter. Honestly, though, you can just drizzle it on your wings directly without it. Arbol chili and garlic wings are great either way. If it’s your first time making them I’d suggest you start out slow. Try the sauce right out of the bottle. Then try it with a little melted butter. See what you think. I like the taste of butter and a great hot sauce. You might want more hot sauce. Or more butter. Either way, you’ll end up with great wings in the end.

Air Fryer Thousand Island Wings

No, it’s not a typo. I made air fryer Thousand Island wings. Oh and not only did I make them, I loved them. Big time. When I first read the recipe I wasn’t sure about what I was getting myself into. Was I about to waste a bunch of good ingredients for some crazy idea that should’ve never come to fruition?

Oh, That Sauce!

The wings for these air fryer Thousand Island wings are pretty much your standard, good air fryer wings. No special seasoning. No special treatment. Nothing that is going to fight with the real star of the show: the sauce. At first, the combination of Thousand Island dressing, onion soup mix and apricot preserves may seem odd. But it ends up being a wonderfully tangy, slightly sweet, tasty sauce that is truly finger-licking good.

Dip Away

Make extra sauce. Dip your wings in it. Dip chips in it. You can even dip (gasp!) chicken nuggets in it. Pretty much anything.

Want Heat?

Add a few good pinches of red pepper flake if you want a bit of a kick to your sauce. But don’t go crazy with it. You don’t want the heat to take over the wonderful flavor.

Pickle-Brined Wings

An online friend of mine recently told me that he never, ever throws out the brine left in a jar of pickles after all of the pickles are gone. He went on to say that he uses it to brine the chicken when he makes Nashville Hot Chicken. I thought to myself, “Darn”, as I flashed back to all of the gallons of pickle brine I’ve watched go down the drain. Though I didn’t have Nashville Hot Chicken on the brain. I wanted wings! And what I got were these delicious pickle-brined wings, super-duper moist and flavorful.

Tender and juicy

The pickle brine doesn’t smack you in the face, it just helped make the chicken more tender and juicy. Do not fear, biting into your wings won’t be like biting into a Vlasic. No, it’ll be like biting into wing greatness!

From now on I am definitely saving my pickle brine. It doesn’t have to come from just pickles either. The juice from anything pickled will do. Just save that stuff up for the next time you make pickle-brined wings and you’ll be as happy as I was.

  • Add the pickle juice. Seal and toss to coat.

  • Combine the seasoning ingredients and sprinkle the wings with it. Note: If you like, you can sprinkle the wings with the seasoning AFTER cooking instead. I've tried it both ways and they came out great no matter which technique I used.

Buttermilk Southwestern Wings

Yep. I did it. I stepped right over that line between ‘fried chicken wings’ and ‘grandma’s fried chicken’. It’s a gray line. You can barely see it. Heck, I’m not sure it even exists. It doesn’t matter really. Because I enjoyed these buttermilk southwestern wings no matter what you call them. Tender, juicy meat that is packed with flavor. Crunchy, delicious coating. What’s not to like?

Sauce On The Side?

You’ll probably want a sauce to go on these buttermilk southwestern wings. Oh, it’s not required really. But to keep from calling these ‘grandma’s fried chicken wings’, you’ll probably want a sauce. Heck, the wing police might come calling if you don’t.

But don’t go drizzling the wings in sauce then tossing them around in a bowl. You’ll lose all of that delicious crunchy coating. Instead, either drizzle the wings with the sauce or (my recommendation!) serve the sauce on the side, for dipping. The nice thing about having a bowl of sauce on the side is you (and your guests) can dunk a little or a lot. You go to pre-drizzling the wings and someone is gonna say they didn’t get enough sauce. Or they got too much. Sauce on the side solves that problem!

  • In a large resealable container add the buttermilk, cilantro, lime zest and juice, garlic and chipotle chili powder. Seal and shake to combine.
  • Add the wings to the container and seal. Shake to coat. Seal and refrigerate overnight.

For the coating

  • Combine the flour, paprika and salt in a large bowl.
  • Working in batches if needed, remove the wings from the marinade. Shake off any excess then transfer to the flour mixture. Toss or roll to coat well. Transfer to a plate.

For the wings

  • Heat a few inches of oil to 350 F in a deep fryer or Dutch oven.
  • Working in batches if needed, fry the wings 8-10 minutes or until golden brown, crunchy and done.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to drain and cool for a few minutes.
  • Serve!

Peri-Peri Wings

Apparently I have been living in a dark, deep cave for years and never heard of peri peri (or piri piri) sauce. Until recently, that is, when I saw an old episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations where he devoured some peri peri chicken in Mozambique. He said it was great, but oh did it burn. Sounded good to me so I found a jar of peri peri sauce at Jungle Jim’s grocery store, and proceeded to make Peri-Peri wings that I then lightly covered in the sour, vinegary, slightly sweet and definitely spicy sauce.

Great Flavor And Heat

I found the peri peri sauce to be quite addicting. Yeah, it’s a bit spicy but it’s really not over-the-top hot in my opinion. It brings a nice earthy pepper to these Peri-Peri wings. I can definitely see myself roasting an entire chicken and covering it in peri peri. That’d make for some mighty good eats. With a kick.

Mexican Wings

I have been enjoying the heck out of the flavors of wing sauces I picked up from the House of Wings. Each and every one has been fantastic. Another cool thing about House of Wings is that on their website they have recipes for using their sauces and a few other simple ingredients to create all-new flavors. Like these Mexican chicken wings. They’re crazy easy and crazy delicious and definitely spicy. There’s nothing fancy going on here, just a great wing sauce. The kind you cannot stop eating.

Heat, Your Way

It’s easy to customize the heat in these Mexican chicken wings to suit your fancy. All you have to do is adjust the ratio of Southern wing sauce to the Nuclear wing sauce. Want more heat? Cut back on the Southern or just add more Nuclear. Less heat? Add more Southern and/or cut back on the Nuclear. My recommendation is that you add the Nuclear sauce slowly, stirring, tasting as you go, until you get the kick you want.

I store my leftover homemade sauces in squeeze bottles. If refrigerated, I set them out an hour before using so they come to room temperature. You don’t want to put cold sauce on hot wings!
